The ALGAL – SAF project theme is to use algae as a raw material for the production of alternative fuels for aviation, which could replace similar fuels of petrochemical origin, without long term sustainability problems, by an integrated technology based on algae. The project will contribute to respect Directive 2009/ 28/ CE, to promote the use of energy from renewable sources, which recommends the UE states that until 2020, 20 % of the energy to be obtained from renewable sources, and 10% of the fuels used in transport.

The main objective of the project refers to complete capitalizing of the algal biomass, with through an integrated system, where from the biomass is extracted the lipid fraction to produce algal oil, followed by dehydration the carbohydrates from the deoiled biomass, in the presence of catalysts, for the production of furan derivatives. Catalytic technologies will be developed to simultaneously process methyl esters of fatty acid and derivatives of furan, by transforming them in alcohol derivatives, and in the end catalytic reforming processes will be made to obtain a mixt made from iso / n alkanes. The final product can be used as it is or an additive component for aviation fuels, the product being compatible and competitive with the aviation fuels which are currently present on the market.
